Iveco S-Way Magirus Edition

2019 - 2021

The Iveco S-Way Magirus Edition is a special edition of the Iveco S-Way heavy truck that revives the Magirus name. It was first shown as a concept truck at the global launch of the Iveco Way range in July 2019, together with the FIT CAB concept. The concept was designed at the Turin design center under Marco Armigliato.

Iveco described the concept as a “statement vehicle” and invited customers to workshops at the 2019 European Truck Racing Championship. The truck was the crowd favorite at the Nürburgring in July 2019, according to Iveco. A series version, hand-finished in Ulm, was announced by Iveco in Germany and was orderable by 30 September 2020.

The truck is based on the series S-Way with the Active Space cab, which has a standing height of 2.15 m (7.05 ft). It can be ordered with all Euro VI/d diesel and natural gas engines available for the S-Way. The Dutch magazine Bigtruck points out that these are modern Iveco Cursor engines, not the Deutz units of the old Magirus-Deutz trucks.

The S-Way range includes the Cursor 9 (8.7 liters, 531 cu in), Cursor 11 (11.1 liters, 677 cu in) and Cursor 13 (12.9 liters, 787 cu in) diesel engines. They are rated from 243 kW (326 hp) to 420 kW (563 hp), with torque from 1,400 to 2,500 Nm (1,033–1,844 lb-ft). Natural gas versions of the Cursor 9 and Cursor 13 offer 250–338 kW (335–453 hp). The gearbox is the Hi-Tronix automated manual with 12 speeds, and a 16-speed version is also listed. These figures describe the S-Way range, not the Edition specifically.

The exterior has two-tone paint in Magirus red and blue, red wheel rims, a silver grille and mirror housings, and “Magirus Edition” decals. The cab carries the stylized logo of Ulm Minster, the old Magirus-Deutz emblem. Optional equipment includes indirect Magirus-style roof lighting, headlight bars, a front guard, air horns and LED flashers.

Inside, the handrails and the multifunction steering wheel are covered in leather with Magirus-red stitching. The center console and the quilted mattress cover use Alcantara with Magirus embroidery, and the Minster emblem appears on the steering wheel cover, the floor mat and the underside of the upper bunk. The cab also has a microwave, a 22-inch (56 cm) TFT TV with a DVB-T antenna, and a sound system with an amplifier and subwoofer.

A right-side turn assistant is standard. It uses a 24 GHz radar with a field of ±85° covering a zone of about 12 m × 3 m (39 ft × 9.8 ft), plus an LED warning display on the A-pillar. Iveco says a considerable number of the hand-finished trucks are on European roads, without giving a figure. Because of the edition’s popularity, Iveco announced it would continue in 2021, and Herpa released a 1:87 scale model in May/June 2021.

Magirus-Deutz was founded in Ulm by Conrad Dietrich Magirus in 1864 (some sources give 1866). It was once an independent truck brand with a strong position in dump trucks, and in the Netherlands it led that segment. In 1975 Magirus merged with Fiat and Unic to form Iveco. According to Bigtruck, square-nose Magirus-Deutz trucks with air-cooled Deutz engines continued to be built in Bolzano, Italy, for special uses such as the oil industry and defense. Afterwards the Magirus name stayed only on fire-fighting equipment, a business Iveco sold to Mutares, with the deal completed in January 2025.
