The Mammoet Rallysport team has introduced their new truck for the comming SilkWay and Dakar 2017 rallys. The team now comes with 3 rallytrucks, two Renault K- rallytrucks and the new bonneted Renault Sherpa. The technical details are said to be about the same as those on the other trucks. Now that means the 13 liter Volvo-Renault engine and a ZF-AsTronic gearbox.
This week, Mack Defense announced that it will be teaming up with JWF Defense Systems to build a versatile Lakota 6×6. The Mack Defense Lakota 6×6 vehicle system, which features a U.S.-built engine and transmission, is capable of a maximum on-road speed of 62 mph with a range of up to 1,400 miles. Available in five configurations, the Lakota 6×6 can transport up to 12 personnel. The vehicle is serviceable across the Volvo Group support network, which features locations around the world.
Volvo Group has presented the first self-driving mining truck. The truck is part of a research and developement programm on autonomous vehicles with the focus on mining. Volvo is especting highere productivity and improved safety. The project is a cooperation between Volvo Group and Saab. The Volvo FMX tipper truck can drive, navigate and unload on- and underground. The truck uses sensors and GPS to operate safely. Moving items like other vehicles are spotted by the sensors.
Almost one-third lower fuel consumption. Volvo Trucks’ new concept vehicle shows how it is possible to drastically boost productivity in long-haul operations. Among the secrets behind these remarkable fuel savings are aerodynamic design and lower kerb weight. With support from the Swedish Energy Agency, Volvo Trucks has developed a new concept vehicle, the Volvo Concept Truck. It is the result of a five year long research project aimed at creating more energy-efficient vehicles. The new concept truck cuts fuel consumption by more than 30 %.
"We continuously work on developing more energy-efficient vehicles. This is a high-priority area both out of environmental concern and in order to reduce our customers' costs. We're proud to be able to drive this development. Our concept truck showcases the immense power of on-going technical advances," says Claes Nilsson, President and CEO Volvo Trucks.
One of the key factors behind the low fuel consumption is the massive 40 % improvement in aerodynamic efficiency that has benefited both the tractor and trailer. "We've modified the entire rig and optimised it for improved aerodynamics as much as possible. For instance, we use cameras instead of rear-view mirrors. This cuts air resistance, so less energy is needed to propel the truck," explains Åke Othzen, Chief Project Manager at Volvo Trucks.
In addition to the aerodynamic improvements, the concept vehicle is fitted with newly developed tyres with lower rolling resistance. The trailer weighs two tonnes less than the reference trailer, which translates into either lower fuel consumption or the possibility of higher payload. The project also includes an improved driveline. The rig was test driven on Swedish roads in autumn 2015.
Since the concept vehicle is part of a research project it will not be available on the market. However, some of its aerodynamic features have already been implemented on Volvo Trucks' series-produced vehicles, and more of its solutions may be fitted in the future.
The aerodynamic improvements:
- Optimised aerodynamic trailer and tractor.
- In order to reduce air resistance, the conventional rear-view mirrors have been replaced by cameras, which have the added advantage of offering better visibility and increased safety.
- Aerodynamically optimised chassis side-skirts cover the rear wheels on the tractor and all the trailer wheels.
- Aerodynamic spoilers extend the trailer and cut air resistance.
- Optimised air flow for the engine's cooling system
- Minimised air resistance at the front of the tractor, the wheel housings and entry steps.
Peterbilt Motors Co. has expanded its refuse truck lineup with the new Model 520. This new model features a new dual-station cab as well as availability with the PACCAR MX-11 engine.
The dual-station cab has two nearly identical work environments so drivers can operate from either the left- or right-hand side, the company said. This includes dual controls for the parking brakes, HVAC system and stereo. The cab also features an enhanced HVAC system for improved airflow and climate control.
“Peterbilt continues to improve the popular ProBilt interior that is ideally suited for vocational applications,” said Scott Newhouse, Peterbilt’s chief engineer. “The Model 520 features Peterbilt’s latest ProBilt design, providing an operating environment that optimizes comfort, ergonomics and productivity.”
Engine options for the Model 520 include the recently launched PACCAR MX-11, with up to 430 HP and 1,550 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as natural gas options, with both 9- and 11-liter engine options available.
The Model 520’s pantograph wipers cover 27% more of the windshield than previous designs for increased safety during inclement weather, the company said. Also, two headlight technologies are available for the Model 520, optional LED lamps and standard single halogen bulb lamps.
“The Model 520 is the foundation of Peterbilt refuse collection vehicles,” said Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President Darrin Siver. “Peterbilt’s Model 520 will give our refuse customers unprecedented levels of uptime, productivity, driver satisfaction and low cost of operation. The dual-seated / dual-drive configuration allows customers to operate the vehicle from both sides of the cab for greater convenience and comfort.”
