In 1989, the Dutch Ministry of Defense awarded DAF an order for 255 recovery vehicles – DAF YBZ 3300 trucks, with an additional option of 30 pieces. They should replace the YB-616 and YB-626, which have been in use for 20 to 30 years. Mid-1986, DAF had delivered two prototypes for a test period of 18 months to the Dutch Royal Army, which were tested there with satisfaction. The supply contract was over 150 million dollars worth, the vehicles were delivered in the early 1990s and used by all branches of the Dutch armed forces.
The YBZ-3300 comes from the civil series DAF FA 1700/1900/2100/2300/2500/2700 and was used for the transport of wheeled vehicles with the same or lower weight. The cabin is from the 3300 range. The maximum lifting capacity of a crane is 8.4 tonnes. In addition to the crane, a salvage winch and an auxiliary winch is attached. It is equipped with a 6-cylinder DAF DKX 1160 engine rated at 260 kW (or 337 hp). Overall dimensions – 9050x2500x3550 mm. In the Afghanistan war (2005-2011), a number of YBZ were equipped with an armored cab.
