DAF » YA 616 / YB 626
In the late 1950s, the Royal Army of the Netherlands decided to find a replacement to the current rolling stock. DAF company got the large order which included several models. DAF YA 616 6x6 trucks was one of them. The truck was very reliable and had a huge towing force. But fuel consumption was really terrible and sometimes was up to 1 liter per kilometer.
The model range included: YA 616 truck with towing force of 9000 kg, YA 616 VL 6-ton flatbed truck, YT 616 tractor to tow 10- or 25-ton trailers (can be distinguished by twin rear wheels), YF 616 fuel tanker, YK 616 tipper and YB 616 wrecker with two winches.
In 1968/69, DAF made 95 copies of an updated YB 626 wrecker. It is distinguished by a heavier front axle with 10.00x20 wheels. The gear ratio of the main gear was also changed. The crane equipment was also changed.
Deliveries began in 1958 (or 1959 according to some data) with 140 copies of YA 616. The last truck had been delivered to the army in the late 1960s. All versions were equipped with a 6-cylinder Continental Red Seal R gasoline engine with a volume of 9866 cc, power of 204 hp and torque of 700 Nm. Gearbox is 5-speed manual synchronized. GVW — 10,150-15,670 kg depending on the version.
In the late 1970s, the YA 616 range was replaced by the YA 2300. YA616 was replaced to the YAZ 2300, YK616 — to the YKZ 2300, YT616 — the YTV 2300, YF616 had no direct successor, but its functions were made by the YTV 2300 with the Y 4440 semi-trailer.
