DAF » YA 5441 / YA 5442
In 1975, DAF started delivering the YA-5441 to the Air Force. The YA-5441 was a five tonne truck with a shorter wheelbase than the YA-4440 and had a 6-cylinder 6170 cc DT615 engine with power of 151 hp. The truck was fitted with double rear tires. The exact amount of delivered trucks is unknown. The 4x4 truck has a wheelbase of 3850 mm and overall dimensions — 7500x2440x2960 mm. Curb weight is 7290 kg.
In 1984, DAF received the order for over 200 military trucks that included 112 5-ton 4x4 Model YA 5442. The model of the 2nd series featured several minor changes. It had the same 151 hp DT615 diesel, wheelbase and dimensions. The Air Force has invested in 16 DAF YA 5442 ALK 5-ton 4 x 4 trucks with HIAB loading cranes. Some of them were equipped with an 8-ton recovery winch. The new vehicles replaced the 20-years-old DAF YB 616 6-ton 6 x 6 recovery trucks on airfields at home and at bases in West Germany.
One of the latest trucks in this range was the YA 5442DH 5-ton load carrier with 825DH diesel engine presented in 1986. This was a 'functional prototype' which can be adapted to meet a potential customer's specific needs. The truck featured a front-mounted winch, 13.00R20 tyres and a Norwegian dropside cargo body built by Central Karrosseriefabrik A/S of Oslo.
