ZIL » 135KP

The latest attempt to use an extensive experience in design of four-axles vehicles was the most original and largest three-piece active combination ZIL-135KP (24x24 wheel configuration), which was supposed to use to deliver of huge off-road equipment and weapons. It was a unique self-propelled system with three identical autonomous units. All sections had an independent of each other mechanical drive. The main purpose of ZIL-135KP active combination was a study of stability, handling and braking qualities of such active combinations.

9-ton commercial chassis ZIL-135LN with a suspension of front and rear axles was used as a leading tractor in this combination. The name to this combination was given by two trailed units ZIL-135KP with capacity of 11.3 tonnes, based on the chassis of 135K. They were equipped with short flatbed bodies, additional power generators and revolutionary electric power steering mechanisms. All trailed units were connected to the leader and combined by a remote control system of powertrains, tires air pressure control systems, braking system. All three units were equipped with a pair of standard 180-horsepower engine ZIL-375YA and traditional for these vehicles transmissions. Total power of the combination - 1080 hp. Curb weight of the leader section - 19.5 tonnes, cargo sections - 10.5 tonnes each. GCVW - 59 tonnes. Total capacity of fuel tanks - 1680 liters.

Factory tests started in July 1969, completed in December next year. Then, from May 1971 to March 1972, the vehicles had passed military tests. According to the test results the total length of the combination was 45.1 m, maximum speed achieved on a dry surface with conventional tires - 66 kph, the minimum turning radius - 13.5 m. Range on a highway - 450-500 km. Its main disadvantage was its low dynamics, poor stability in straight-line motion at speeds above 60 kph. The active combination ZIL-135KP was the last development in a field of military AWD vehicles made by ZIL.
