Volvo presented the new FM

Volvo presented the new FM

Volvo Trucks now presents its new Volvo FM. The structure of the cab in the new Volvo FM remains old but the company was modified it. The cab sits low on the chassis, enabling a convenient two-step entry and a better visibility for the driver - and the dark-coloured section immediately under the windscreen emphasises this low appearance. Just as in the FH, Volvo's classic iron mark has been moved up to a new position below the windscreen. The upper part of the cab front is made in one single piece which can be easily opened. A convenient grab-handle is integrated into the front. The lower part of the grille can folded out to form a broad step, convenient for instance when cleaning the windscreen. To ensure top-class quality and the safest working environment possible, the cab is made of high-tensile steel and it has been tested according to the world's most stringent safety norms.

The new headlamps with their distinctive lines also emphasise the family ties with the new Volvo FH. Their performance is improved both on high and low beam. Servicing is much easier, since all the headlamp functions, including the turn indicators and the eye-catching, angled Daytime Running Lights (DRL), are integrated into one and the same unit. The customer can further enhance headlamp efficiency by specifying Bi-Xenon and active headlights.

The driver has a more comfortable and ergonomically designed workplace thanks to a completely new dashboard and number of new in-cab features. The new seat can be tilted forward an additional four degrees, and the backrest is now 10 millimetres slimmer. This gives more adjustment scope and a better driving position, above all for tall drivers. The new seat design also provides better lumbar and side support, and there is more legroom since the starter key is moved to the instrument panel. The new instrument panel is angled toward the driver and all the buttons and controls are in easy view and within convenient reach. The steering wheel has integrated controls for several functions, including cruise control, phone, Dynafleet and navigation. The new Volvo FM can also be equipped with the radar/camera-based driver assistance system Forward Collision Warning.

The new Volvo FM brings steering and handling to a completely new level. Volvo Dynamic Steering, improved suspension both front and rear and new engine mountings are upgrades that contribute to the new Volvo FM model's outstanding road manners. Volvo Dynamic Steering combines an electronically controlled electric motor on the steering gear with hydraulic power steering. At low speeds, the driver can sit back in a relaxed position and steer without having to strain shoulder and arm muscles. Volvo Dynamic Steering provides automatic self-centring when reversing. The system automatically compensates for heavily cambered roads and side winds, allowing the driver to steer straight ahead without having to tug the steering wheel.

Another new feature is three steered axles, one at the front and two at the rear on the 8x2 with tridem, two at the front and one at the rear on the 8x2 with two front axles. The I-See technology, a supplement to the I-Shift transmission, is available in updated form on the Volvo FM. I-See is mainly developed for long-haul applications and can save up to five percent in fuel consumption. The technology electronically records information about the topography of the roads on which the truck is driven. Other fuel-saving features and services available to Volvo drivers are Dynafleet Fuel & Environment, the Fuel Advice service and the Efficient Driving training course.

The new Volvo FM is being launched with a full range of 11- and 13-litre engines. All versions meet the forthcoming Euro 6 requirements, which come into force at the start of 2014. The D13 is available from 420 to 500 horsepower, while the D11 engine spans the power range from 330 to 450 horsepower.

Just a new front fascia on the same old truck. The new Iveco Stralis Hi Way is also the same situation, a new front fascia on the same old truck.
