Mercedes-Benz » Atego I with GVW 6,5 - 15 tons
In 1998, a new Atego family was presented, which replaced the LK range, producing since 1984. The range of total masses of light versions is 6,5-15 tons. The Atego has a more spacious cabin with 60% less windage. Customers can choose from four basic variants. The most compact cab S has an overall length of 1650 mm and internal height of 1520 mm. The length of its more spacious versions is 1830 mm. There is also a cabin with an index L. One version has an external length of 2250 mm and a standard roof, while the other has an inner height increased to 1920 mm and two sleeping shelves. The trucks with a GVW 10.5 tons have cabins with the floor is just 818 mm above the road. In heavy versions this distance is 966 mm. The trucks with GVW more than 12 tones are equipped with seats on a pneumatic suspension. The 4.25 liters 4-cylinder diesel engine 900 series (Eco Power) with output of 122, 152 or 170 hp is already proven in operations. This motor can be replaced by in-line 6 cylinder 6.37 liter engine with output of 231, 245 or 275 hp. The engines have an electronic Telligent system and meet Euro-3 ecological standards. The Atego is equipped with a mechanical 5- and 9-speeds ZF gearbox or 6- and 12-speeds own made gearbox. As an option an automatic transmission Allison can be ordered. Driving axles have a wide range of gear ratios. The main gear is hypoid. The frame design is unusual. It consists of two parts rigidly connected to each other. The front one is made of Z-shaped profiles and allows to reduce the floor of the cabin. The rear part is made of U-shaped rails and adapted for mounting different bodies and aggregates. The Atego range included trucks with 14 different wheelbases - from 3010 to 6960 mm. The suspension is on parabolic leaf springs. It is possible to order a pneumatic suspension. The trucks have ventilated disk brakes of all wheels. ABS is standard equipment, and ESP is an option. In 1999 the Atego family received the title "Truck of The Year 1999".
