Mercedes-Benz » Actros '2019
September 2018, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated its new flagship model Actros 2019 at the IAA in Hanover. The truck has got some visual changes, while the main feature is rear view cameras, called MirrorCam.
Until now, the cameras that replaced the rear-view mirrors were installed only on concept vehicles. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Actros became the first production truck equipped with rear-view cameras. The MirrorCam system provides a significantly improved 360 degrees view. But MirrorCam is not only increases safety but also improves aerodynamics of the truck.
The new Actros has been significantly improved in terms of safety and comfort. The most important system is the new Active Drive Assist. Unlike other similar systems that operate only in a certain speed range, Active Drive Assist gives the driver access to semi-automatic driving at all speeds, which is realized for the first time in a commercial truck. The system uses data from the radar and cameras to control the traffic on the road.
Active Drive Assist is based on the already proved Proximity Control Assist system with stop-and-go function, as well as Lane Keeping Assist. Active Drive Assist brakes the truck if it gets too close to a vehicle driving in front and accelerates again until a set speed is reached. It also actively keeps the vehicle in lane. To do this, Active Drive Assist uses the new Servotwin steering system. In situations where the vehicle is not being driven semi-automated, Servotwin supplements the steering torque applied by the driver with additional steering torque and thereby improves the driving comfort. The 2019 Actros also received Active Brake Assist 5 is a further improvement of the fourth generation system.
Compared to its predecessor, the new Actros consumes 3% less fuel on a highway. With average annual mileage of up to 120,000 kilometers, this will ensure a significant reduction in operating costs. When driving on country roads, savings are even higher and can reach 5%. To further reduce fuel consumption, the gear ratio has been reduced from 2.533 to 2.412.
Externally trucks of the new generation can be distinguished by curved LED daylight running lights integrated into the headlight unit. The new Intelligent Light system can automatically switch between dipped beam and main beam, as well as an automatic cornering light and front fog lamps.
Anyone who enter inside the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Actros will immediately notice the digital instrument panel. Two color displays form the basis of this completely new interface between the driver and truck, each with a diagonal screen size of 10 inches. In place of the conventional instrument cluster with its speedometer, rev counter and fuel gauge, the Multimedia Cockpit has a primary, colour display installed behind the steering wheel featuring high-resolution, flat-screen technology. This screen provides the driver with all basic information relevant to driving and much more, such as Active Drive Assist displays. The central area of the display can be configured to suit individual requirements.
