In 1986, the tractor KrAZ-3E6440 with an active semitrailer was transformed into a prototype of the 4th generation, with an index 4E6440. The main problems of the 3rd generation prototypes were solved: high level of vibration and poor handling. The 4E6440 got a new hood top with two cylindrical air filters, as well as a two-piece front radiator grille with reduced connector line. The prototype was send to test as a combination with an active trailer CHMZAP-93861. The road train got an index 4E6010.
