Autocar » Type U

Autocar provided number of tankers and wreckers to the US Navy on their Model U70 chassis of 1939-40. Those trucks were still heavily chromed, as many trucks were just prior to WW2. A 106 horsepower six-cylinder engine provided power.

As World War II approached, several 10-ton 6x4 type trucks were purchased to perform heavy chores, primarily on hard surfaces where maximum traction was not required. A large fleet of such Autocar U-9064s were put into the US Navy's vehicle fleet, primarily as a refueling tankers with 1,610 gallon capacity. Built around 1940, they saw service at Navy facilities all over the world. Completely equipped with pumps and hoses for quick discharge, they were adequately powered by a six-cylinder in-line L-head gasoline engine and rode on 9.75x24 tires and a 155-inch wheelbase.
