Atkinson » Mk II MoT 6x6
In 60s Atkinson's specials continued to take up a disproportional amount of time and space at the factory. Apart from the dumptrucks the only ones to be made in substantial numbers (over 400) were the MoT 6x6 snowplough/gritters for the new Motorways. These carried Atkinson's of Clitheroe equipment (not connected with Atkinson Vehicles Ltd.) and used Cummins NHE 180 diesels and the first load compensated braking system to be found as standard on a British vehicle. The original prototype used Cummins V8 engines with Allison automatic transmissions, but the in-line six-cylinder 12.17 litre Cummins and ZF six-speed manual combination were chosen for production. Some chassis were also built with 8x6 drive, some had AEC engine. The cab of these models has the original shape of the windshield and lower installed wipers.
