BAE Systems » Iklwa

September 2006, BAE Systems Land Systems OMC introduced the updated Ratel (6×6) IFV armored vehicle called Iklwa. The first prototype was equipped with the South African RDL Rogue overhead weapon station with a 12.7 mm M2 machine gun.

The Iklwa armored personnel carrier was equipped with a 336 kW Cummins ISL diesel engine coupled to a Renk HCV106 gearbox. The engine with the gearbox was placed behind the driver on the left side. The central driver's position at the front of the hull has been retained, but the cabin got an upgraded wraparound dashboard and rear view camera.

This has freed up considerable space in the rear of the vehicle. The infantry can load and unload through a huge rear door with a power-operated ramp. There are 8 hatches (4 on each side), which can be fixed in a vertical position.

The roof consists of three bolt on sections. This allows to configure it depending on the task, for example, to install a high roof for the mobile command center. Iklwa can carry up to 12-13 people (depending on the version). The individual seat fixed to the roof is provided for each person.

The chassis uses MAN beam axles with differential locks, suspension on the longitudinal arms and wishbones and Michelin 16.00 R20 tires. In addition to the basic armored personnel carrier, a whole range was developed: medical, logistic, fighting, a missile launcher, repair and others. The curb weight is 14.5 tons, the full weight is 23.5 tons. The maximum speed is 110 kph. Production started in 2009.
