Mercedes-Benz » Unimog 404 / S
In 1955, the Unimog S or 404 was presented. The truck has long wheelbase and was intended mainly for armed forces. The main customer was the German army. First export buyer was France. These trucks received an oval grille with round headlights in the corners, typical to commercial Mercedes-Benz vehicles of those years. The wheelbase has grown by about 1 meter, compared with the Unimog 401 - first time up to 2700; and then to 2900 mm. The Unimog S / 404 was equipped not with a diesel engine, but with a modified gasoline engine taken from a passenger car - a 6-cylinder M180 from Mercedes-Benz 220a developed 82 hp at 2.2 liters of working volume. There was a more powerful 130 hp version M130 engine with a working volume of 2.8 liters. But it was used later. Maximum speed of the Unimog S / 404 reached 85 km/h. Gross vehicle weight was 5.0 tons. Vehicles spent between 18.5 and 60 litres of fuel per 100 km. Unimog S was very successful and produced until 1972. About 46 thousand of these trucks were made, 25 thousand of which for the Bundeswehr.
