MAN » 630L2 A / AE
In 1956 for the competition to design the 5-ton army truck the MAN company had presented a prototype 630L2A (4x4) - future evolution of the ML4500A model. Two years later, successfully passed the comparative tests, the company received an order for 30 thousand trucks. MAN 630L2A was a typical military truck with characteristic rectangular hood and fenders, flat doors, folding windshield, soft-top cab, metal flatbed with awning and removable benches for 20 soldiers. The trucks received a multifuel 6-cylinder engine D1246 (8.3 liters, 130 hp) with direct injection, 6-speed gearbox ZF and 2-speed transfer gearbox, beam axes on leaf springs, steering mechanism with booster, pneumatic dual-braking system and rear dual wheels. The 630L2 AE model was differed by single rear wheels. All trucks had wheelbase 4600 mm (truck tractors - 4100 mm), GVW - 13 tones, range of speeds from 3 to 66 km/h and consumed an average 26 liters of fuel per 100 km. These trucks were the base for many different versions with special equipment and bodies, including radar stations and missile systems. Until 1972, over 79,7 thousand trucks of this range were built.
