KamAZ » 54102
KamAZ 5410 was not heavy enough for long distances routes. So the company decided to improving the performance characteristics of certain modifications. To make this ZIL (this factory developed prototypes of KamAZ trucks) designed the only model — KamAZ 54102.
Еhe first prototype of KAMAZ-54102 tractor was built in December 1972 with a ten-cylinder YaMZ-741 engine rated at 260 hp, five-speed gearbox, separate brake system, exhaust brake and heavier driving axles to increased payload.
KamAZ 54102 differed by increased payload on the fifth wheel, so it could tow heavier semi-trailers with a gross weight of up to 25 tonnes and a carrying capacity of up to 19.5 tonnes. At the same time, the new model was 95% unified with KamAZ 5410.
The following two prototypes — KamAZ 2E54102 and KamAZ 3E54102 — were built in 1973 and 1974, respectively. They were intended for carrying out factory tests and eliminating the identified deficiencies. Two more prototypes of KamAZ 54102 were assembled in 1975 for the government tests. After the extensive testing, KamAZ 54102 was recommended for mass production with a minimal set of improvements.
In total, five prototypes of KamAZ 54102 were built by Moscow Automobile Plant (ZIL). In 1980, the model went to mass production under the name KamAZ 54112, because they got a new eight-cylinder KamAZ-740 (210 hp) engine. The production of KamAZ ten-cylinder engines was never established.
