KamAZ » 5510
In December 1969, ZIL made two KamAZ-5510 dump truck prototypes with YaMZ-641 engines (rated at 160 hp) and five-speed gearboxes without a divider. The following year MMZ plant mounted dumper bodies on these chassis.
The first tests showed that there were serious complaints about these bodies. MMZ factory was given the task to rework their design. At the same time, Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) also has got the task to develop their own design of dump body.
As a result, the first two protototypes got the updated dump bodies by MMZ, while the prototypes built in December 1971 were equipped with bodies designed by MAZ. In 1972, all previously built KAMAZ-5510 prototypes got more powerful YAMZ-7401 diesel rated at 180 hp.
The next two KamAZ-5510 dumpers were made in September 1972 and were fitted with reinforced bodies by MAZ, which were recognized as the most successful. The prototypes of the last two series (1971 and 1972) passed the whole complex of tests, including the government, and were recommended for mass production.
But it didn't begin as the load capacity (7,000 kg) was very close to MAZ dumpers, while the country needed heavier trucks. That's why Kamaz started production of 10-ton Kamaz 5511 dumpers with new dump body of their own design. Totally, ZIL built eight prototypes (in four series) of KamAZ-5510 dumpers since 1969 to 1972.
