KamAZ » 5320 / 53202
When ZIL got the task to create the first truck for the newely built KamAZ truck the team decided to use the already finished project of the three-axle ZIL 170 truck, which fully complied with the technical requirements.
The base vehicle of the new Kamaz range was KAMAZ 5320 with payload of 8 tonnes (GCVW is up to 16 tonnes). It should be equipped with YAMZ-641 (V8; 9.5L; 210 hp) engine, two-disk clutch and five-speed manual gearbox with a divider, two-stage driving axles with a lockable center differential.
In 1969, the first prototype of KamAZ 5320 and two long wheelbase trucks KamAZ 53202 were assembled. A year later, in November 1970, another KamAZ 5320 and KamAZ-53202 prototypes were built.
After factory tests it turned out that the YaMZ 641 diesel did not fit well to the new machine, and it was replaced to YaMZ 740 powerunit of the same power, but with an increased working volume. All new prototypes were built using the new engine. In 1971, the cabins of some prototypes were rebuilt to sleeper versions.
The next generation of prototypes (KamAZ 5320 and KamAZ 53202) was built in December 1971, and in September 1972, two KamAZ 5320 and two KamAZ 53202 prototypes were made. The last prototype made by ZIL was KAMAZ-5320 built in 1973. Totally in 1969-1973 12 prototypes of 3 generations were built.
