The base model was fitted with a Kamaz 740 diesel rated at 210 hp and a 5-speed manual gearbox. In 1986, after a minor update, the index was changed to Ural 4420-10. Since 1989 to 1993, the factory produced Ural 4420-02 with Kamaz 740.10-20 diesel rated at 220 hp, since 1993 — Ural 4420-10 with YAMZ 236 diesel.
Ural 4420 was primarily used by Soviet army and known as the version with a 'high 5th wheel'. A civil version Ural 44202 was more popular. It is lighter, has greater payload, decreased length, width and height, and is sat on smaller tires O-47A instead of OI-25 of the Model 4420. Ural 4420 has full rear fenders, while the Model 44202 — only half-fenders. A tire inflation system is also a feature of the Model 4420.
