An interesting KAMAZ 54909 prototype with a hydrostatic drive was showcased at the COMTRANS 2017 in Moscow. The system transforms 4x2 tractor to AWD. The prototype is based on KAMAZ 5490.
Torque tranfers to the font wheels with the help of hydrostatic drive. Hydrostatic engines are integrated in the wheels and powered by hydraulic fluid. There are no a transfer case, propeller shaft or heavy front axle.
The front axle can be activated at speeds up to 25 kph. If this speed is exceeded, the drive automatically turns off. This is enough to get out of the ice or leave the mud. On protracted descents, the system can be used as a retarder.
