Volvo » N86 / N88
The Titan’s successor in 1965 carried some of the best-known numbers in transport history: 88. The F88 became the yardstick by which all other trucks came to be measured and of which 40,000 were built. Half as numerous was the Volvo N88 (N for normal control) which, whilst used in highway haulage, was primarily a site, forestry or heavy export model.
From 1969 it could have a two range eight-speed box, new engines, improved suspension and some were equipped with torque converters for specialist roles like ultra-heavy haulage. Beneath the N88 came the smaller normal control N86, the 8 signifying that all were part of a rationalized System 8 range and shared a styling resemblance to the Titan and Viking. Volvo N88 was equipped with Volvo D100 (9,602 cc, 200 hp) or turbocharged Volvo TD100 (9,602 cc, 260 hp). The N86 got a new Volvo D70 (6,724 cc, 150 hp) or turbocharged Volvo TD70 (6,724 cc, 210 hp).
