A 2-axle rear engined tractor MAZ_528 was the first military prototype created in design department SKB-1 in November 1955. It was equipped with a two-stroke 6-cylinder diesel engine YAZ-206 with a capacity of 165 hp and units of YAZ-210 truck with a 5-speed gearbox. A 2-speed transfer gearbox with a center differential, integrated planetary reduction gears and power steering was developed specially for the new model. MAZ-528 featured shifted forward 2-pleace all-metal cabin from MAZ-200 (with some modifications) and 21.00 - 28 low-pressure tires. The construction also included a power take-off. A reverse unit in the transmission allowed MAZ 528 had 10 forward and 10 backward speeds.
MAZ 528 had a wheelbase of 2400 mm and was designed to work with mounted dozer equipment and as a tractor for heavy equipment weighing up to 30 tonnes. To improve towing characteristics it had a 2.5 tonnes ballast. GVW reached 18,350 kg that allowed to tow a low-bed trailer MAZ-5208 with a T-44M tank. Length - 5400 mm, width - 3150 mm, ground clearance - 570 mm, the maximum speed on a highway - 30 kph.
