2.5-ton ZIL-157R prototype with three axles was built in June 1957. It was a combination of units of trucks ZIS-150, ZIS-151 and ZIL-157. It was equipped with a 6-cylinder engine rated at 104 horsepower, tire inflation system, power steering, front and rear wheels steering and medium axle from ZIL-157. It hadh wide 16.00 - 20 tires or arched tires. Ground clearance under axles reached 460 mm, curb weight - about 6 tonnes. Due to its high maneuverability and rolling of wheels on one track offroad headling was increased significantly.
