KrAZ » E260E / 2E260E
In the middle of 70s KrAZ developed prototypes with gas turbine engines (GTE) based on chassis of future serial models KrAZ-260. The first prototype was made in 1974 and called KrAZ E260E. It was equipped with two-stage 350 hp gas-turbine engine GAZ-99D, which had 3-6 times less pollutant emissions, increased by 20% efficiency and reduced by 50% weight, comparing with diesel engine YaMZ-238. To decrease working revolutions (33,000 rev/min) it got a heavy gear reducer, bringing them to the level of 2000-2500 rev/min, clutch and gearbox, as well as an enhanced fresh air-intake system with special filters. Externally, KrAZ E260E could be destinquished by a wider radiator and longer rectangular hood. Duing the tests its complex transmission was broken.
In 1976, the second prototype was produced. It was the 10-tonne version 2E260E with a more compact and economical 360-horsepower gas-turbine engine GAZ-99DM that fitted into a standard engine compartment. The prototype of the second generation was differed only by an air intake on the cab sides. During the first test transmission was broken again, and in the early 1980s, GTE project was closed.
