Albion » 24C/5
One of the largest orders for the Caledonian came in 1960 from Shell-Mex and BP Ltd. who ordered a batch with 4,000 gallon tanks by Alfred Miles Lts.of Gloucester. These were 24C/5 models which had Leyland 0.680 engines and a front bogie which was set back to allow an easy entrance cab to be fitted. This meant that the standard Leyland Octopus cab was unsuitable, and the order also went to Alfred Miles, with at least on other being supplied by Duramin. Like the tank, the Miles cab was also of lightweight construction, and the forward sloping windscreen design proved to be troublesome after long service. The structure deformed easily, the windscreen glass and surrounds parted company and accident repairs were difficult, all of which led to a number of modifications and rebuilds.
