AMO

AMO

August 2, 1916, On the initiative of a prominent Russian industrialist and banker Mr. Ryabushinsky, the Automotive Moscow Plant Joint Stock Company, abbreviated as AMO, was founded. Subsequently, it was deciphered as the Moscow Automobile Society. Its main task was assembling the Italian 1.5-ton trucks FIAT 15Ter. The assembly began in the fall of 1917.

On August 15, 1918, the Supreme Council of the National Economy declared the plant AMO the national property of the Republic of Soviets. Until 1919, the plant made 1,319 trucks, after which AMO switched to the repair of American 3-ton White trucks, which in large quantities were supplied to Russia during the First World War. The repaired trucks wore the White-AMO brand.

In January 1924, AMO began preparations for the production of its own 1.5-ton AMO-F-15 truck, which was based on the same Fiat 15Ter. The first truck was assembled on the night of November 1, 1924, and on November 7, the first 10 bright red trucks passed in a festive demonstration on Red Square. AMO-F-15 became the first truck fully manufactured in the USSR.

In 1926, Mr. Likhachev, the former mechanic of the Putilov factory, became the new head of AMO. He boldly took up the reorganization of production. At the beginning of 1928 it was decided to reconstruct the plant in order to increase the annual production volume from 3 to 25 thousand vehicles.

Production of trucks under the brand name AMO continued until 1933, after which the plant received the name of Stalin and started using brand name ZIS.
