Toyota Project Portal 2.0

2018 - 2018

In 2017, Toyota developed and tested its first electric truck called Project Portal. A year later they presented an improved version of the fuel cell truck — Toyota Project Portal 2.0.

Built using a handful of components sourced from Toyota Mirai, Project Portal 2.0 is one of the world’s first zero-emission heavy trucks to be built by an OEM. The company said the mileage for one charge is about 480 kilometers, 160 kilometers more than the first generation prototype. At the same time designers managed to maintain the output of power plant, which still makes 670 hp and 1794 Nm.

Kenworth T680 was taken as a chassis for Toyota Project Portal 2.0. It is equipped with a more versatile cabin with a sleeping compartment. The company’s engineers have used unique fuel cabinet combination which made it more compact and allows more space for the cab without increasing the wheelbase.

Thanks to these changes Toyota believes that Project Portal 2.0 is “more commercially viable” than the first generation truck.
